5 Y2K PERFUMES THAT STILL HIT TODAY
The low-rise jeans, frosted eye shadow, and Fendi baguettes plastered across our TikTok and Instagram feeds are proof that Y2K beauty and fashion trends are alive and well—and we’re honestly pretty pumped about it. With the turn of the century, the noughties were a time of pivotal change when it came to beauty. Gone were the days of muted makeup and floral grandma-esque perfumes (those still have a spot in our stash too!). This game-changing shift brought a new wave of fragrance icons that were deemed sultry, sweet, sexy, and of course hard to forget. While there were many swoon-worthy —and many celebrity-endorsed—fragrances during that time, there are a few that have maintained their icon status into today. If you’re interested in taking a trip down scent memory lane, we’ve got you. Fulfill all your Y2K aesthetic dreams with these five iconic nostalgic scents that still belong on your vanity today.
Britney Spears Curious Eau de Parfum
This fruity floral banger from our girl Britney first hit the shelves in September 2004. With over $500 million in sales within the first five years, it’s easy to see why this fragrance from the popstar was a literal scentsation. The turquoise bottle decked out with a tasseled atomizer opens with a bouquet of lush florals including magnolia and lotus. There’s also a strong pear note at the heart that carries through to the dry down. If you’re curious as to where the borderline sickly sweet scent comes from then you can attribute it to the candied vanilla note that’s kissed with sandalwood and musk for a sensual touch.
Sure, Happy launched in 1997, but it didn’t truly hit its peak until the early 2000s. Smartly named, this joyful fragrance was many 90s babies’ premier perfume. The sparkling scent staple instantly transports you back to your teenhood with its bright blend of citrus and floral notes including Ruby Red grapefruit and bergamot along with Boysenberry bush flower, orchid, Hawaiian Wedding flower, and magnolia.
Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Eau de Parfum
Just like their blinged-out velour tracksuits, Juicy Couture perfumes have garnered a cult following over the years. Considered to be the IT girl scent of its time, Viva La Juicy boasts the perfect mix of notes for a candied berry scent that can be worn both day and night. The fruity gourmand stars sweet creamy vanilla, sticky caramel, and succulent berries, but there are also notes of gardenia, jasmine, and amber to give that heady kick.
Viktor&Rolf Flowerbomb Eau de Parfum
This pale pink fragrance icon was born in 2005—and has since been made into many spin-offs—but there’s nothing that tops the original. One whiff is all it takes to recognize this powdery floral that had us in a chokehold between 2005 and 2010. A complex concoction of spicy, sweet, floral, and powdery notes is the reason it makes everyone get weak at the knees after just one whiff. It starts with fresh jasmine sambac and rose centifolia, but ends with a soft dose of warm and cozy patchouli and vanilla.
J.Lo Glow Eau de Toilette
Jennifer Lopez’s foray into perfume was unlike anything else at the time. While many songstress-founded fragrances on the market debuted with a very youthful, sweet, and candy-like aroma, J.Lo’s Glow took on a different approach. Housed inside a sensually shaped bottle is the smell of freshly showered skin. Considered to be the first clean girl scent, it features the perfect blend of sweet, soapy, and musky notes. You can find top notes of grapefruit, effervescent neroli, and sweetened and musky orange blossom plus middle notes of sharp jasmine, tuberose, and rose. The dry down is our favorite part—it’s made up of the luscious vanilla and orris root for a creamy ending.
