They rub shoulders with the most influential style and tastemakers and know a thing or two about how important fragrance is when you’re putting together style looks. You’d love to have the opportunity to talk to this certain someone, right? Well, consider your wish granted because we had the pleasure to chat with none other than Karina Bik, the NY-based content creator, influencer, model, and proud owner of more than 130 fragrances.

How would you describe your personal fragrance philosophy?
I’m the proud owner of a fairly large collection of around 130 different fragrances, many of which were acquired during Covid!
I switch my fragrances multiple times a day based on my outfit, mood, season/weather, and occasion, among other things! My favorite notes are probably tonka bean, wood, and white florals, and I literally never leave the house without applying fragrance liberally! I’ve also recently begun using perfume as aromatherapy before going to sleep, for my yoga classes, or just running in the park 😅
Can you explain, in your own words, the interconnection of style and scent?
For me, a look isn’t complete without fragrance because it’s often the first impression you give before setting foot in a room or meeting someone, and a bad fragrance or outfit can impact the entire ensemble. The style I’m going for is urban and trendy, yet elegant, and I typically go for more niche perfume houses whose craftsmanship and attention to detail mirror the outfits I’m wearing.
We know you love French artisan perfumeries. How does Ex Nihilo suit your style vibe?
I recently had the chance to visit Grasse, France, where many of the raw materials that go into French perfumes are sourced, and it was really quite breathtaking! I am a strong proponent of using natural and raw materials as much as possible in perfumery, and Ex Nihilo has done an extraordinary job of integrating high concentrations of natural into fragrances like Fleur Narcotique, which is a fruity floral fragrance that’s on a lot of people’s wish lists these days!
This will probably sound like asking a mother for her favorite child, but if you were hard-pressed to choose a favorite from the fragrances you received from Ex Nihilo, which one would you choose and why?
I’m very fond of the whole lineup, but if I had to choose one, I’d say that Lust in Paradise is probably my favorite – it has fruity and floral top/middle notes, as well as musk, amber, and cedar notes in the dry down, and it’s precisely what I was looking for this summer!
