When Etienne de Swardt approached me about creative directing a fragrance whose name would be the title of my novel, I told my perfumer, Caroline Sabas, that we were creating the fragrance Anne would wear. She is also very specific. Coolly crisply English, covered in but untouched by the silver, materialistic movie industry, literary, somewhat removed.
“You Or Someone Like You is not the ‘scent of LA’ or ‘the smell of the Hollywood Hills captured.’ It is not one of those olfactory synecdoches. It is, on the other hand, stylistically and in its technical construction what a Los Angeles woman would wear in my view. Caroline and I discussed this at each step during the creation process. It is contemporary, 21st century. It is LA, whatever that means, though in part it means the norms a scent would follow in a meeting at one of the agencies near Wilshire, at a studio, at a lunch in Bel Air or dinner off Beverly Drive. (The raw materials are completely irrelevant. The work is the work. If you need to know what it’s made of, don’t wear it; You is not for you.)

You Or Someone Like You is probably one of the freshest perfumes I’ve worn in my whole life. Imagine a fragrance that like Don Quixote sets off to fight the invisible LA heat and wins. Chandler Burr wows to never list the raw ingredients and the notes, but they can be sensed, as one by one or like a gang of friends play hide and seek with your nose and your sense of smell.
You can sense the minty leaves, with sugary sprinkle reminiscent of mojito, not in sweet, sticky but fresh without a dash of dewy way. There is a never-ending freshness, in a unique way, where fresh is stripped off its boringly aquatic narrative. I can sense some woodsy notes laying low, covered in greenery. And then of course is the floral dimension, that is in constant motion and subtly amplifies its presence.
You or Someone Like You is a truly unique fragrance, with Etat’s definition of uniqueness underlying the whole composition.
The veil of mystery that obscures the notes pyramid is not yet another marketing trick. In this particular fragrance, the quote “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” applies perfectly. The point is not to dissect the fragrance and strip it to the point of its parts. It is about the perfume as a whole, about enjoying yourself while you wear it. It gives you the liberty of being you or maybe even someone like you, someone you always wanted to be.
It gives you the freedom to be whoever you want. And that is the greatest gift of wearing this fragrance.
